If you are looking for something fun to do with the kids online tonight, this is just what the doctor ordered.
NASA is inviting people of all ages to include their name on a microchip that will land on the moon aboard the Lunar Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, spacecraft.
Its actually pretty neat. You input your name (or the name of your children) and NASA will program the names on a microchip and launch it to the moon.
You get a nifty Adobe PDF certificate that says your name is on the moon that you can print of save for posterity.
When I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut more than anything, and all things space related still strike a chord with me.
All you have to do is fill out the form on this website and someday (hopefully in our lifetimes) someone will land there from Earth and read the names. I submitted my son’s name and I can’t wait until he is old enought to let this experience spark his imagination.
The deadline for submitting names is June 27, 2008.
